Politician, Revolutionary Nationalist, Suffragette and Socialist. Born to an old Anglo-Irish family, studied art and in Paris married a Polish count. Initially involved in Irish artistic circles, became a passionate nationalist and joined Sinn Fein in 1908. Took part in the 1916 Dublin Rising. In December 1918 became the first woman elected to the British Parliament, (for Sinn Fein); refused to take up her seat. Jailed in 1919. Opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 and joined de Valera's Fianna Fail party in 1926. She remained an extreme Republican until the end.
